Smithers Pride Society began with an event. As the need for more queer visibility, support and celebration had been building in Smithers throughout the years, once we had a Pride Day, that made it clear we needed to organize into a formal society. In May of 2017, the Gender-Sexuality Alliance at Smithers Secondary School hosted a Pride celebration that attracted not only students, but town citizens as well. By next year 2018, a connected and expanding group of Smithereens coordinated a Main St. Pride Celebration as well. After this event, the gears started turning for the process to create the Smithers Pride Society, which was incorporated under the Societies act on June 21, 2019.

The purpose of the Society is to initiate, create, sponsor and develop educational and cultural activities and events, in a non-profit and charitable basis, to promote the development and visibility of, and in pride in the two-spirited, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and greater 2SLBGTQ+ communities of Smithers, BC Canada.
